Do you intend to purchase Art for your home? Exactly how do you select a piece for that living room wall, the dining room or a smaller picture for your bedroom? Boy, this is a big subject and 100's of designers and artists have written volumes about it. Let me take a stab at this huge subject.
First, there is so much Visual Art out there to chose from, and we need help to narrow our choices down with these three thoughts and questions.
*Do you want the colours to match your room? (not really a good idea)
*Do you want painting to be scenery, flowers, pots and pans, etc.? (maybe this will work)
*Do you want to spend what is in your budget regardless of whether you like the picture or not? (maybe you shouldn't be shopping for a painting and a print will do fine?)
Maybe I can help you align your thoughts for purchase of a painting. Consider the colours in the work to be important; and concentrate on the values in the piece and the tones. For example, tones are colours like red and pink, both use the same tube of paint except one has white added and that makes the pink.
"Colour defines contemporary Art." says Martin Kinnear. " Value gives the first impression and Value is the relative lightness or darkness of any colour hue. Think pink again and then red. Red is dark, sedate, and pure, then add the white and the pink comes forward and the dark red recedes.
The Values in the painting will give you the first impression. "Value is the dominate force in human perception because value can create the illusion of depth." Hold the first impression in your memory!! If your eye likes it on first impression, then you will always like it. Forget the cost for once, and don't worry about the subject too much. The intense colours or the faded colours will take their place in your mind and the painting should make you happy for a long, long time.
