Portfolio of Paintings by Gayle Howard
I selected a forest grove in my neighborhood and took photos. I decided to use watercolour paints to highlight the real beauty I find in these sorts of scenes and again keeping with my theme I wanted to display the wonders of our earths forests.
The Painting above was inspired by the "Resurrection". I incorporated symbols and signs to encourage the viewer to contemplate each Christian Motif and it's meaning. Included for example is a representation of a Rose window. These types of stained glass windows appear in many cathedrals today. I also wanted to pay homage to the Sistine Chapel in Rome with its wonderful ceiling paintings. The clean white garments are intended as a reminder that our garments will be white as snow and the butterfly resurrect out of its cocoon to fly to the heavens above in total freedom.
This painting is done entirely with coloured pencils and it measures 22" x 30" cotton cold pressed rag. The theme is the story of the Centurion and the Angel from Romans chapter 8 in the Bible. I included symbols and motifs that represent the Christian Church and I tied them together with a Rose window and a lot of colour.
"I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne...and his robe filled the temple." Isaiah chapter 6. I used my imagination to illustrate this scripture and to use motifs again and robes of splendor.
I coloured a picture of what I call " the ignorables" and it is a mud puddle filled with last falls leaves. Colours of the season from coloured pencils applied to cotton rag paper and measures 22" x 30". Above
More "ignorables"....who loves barnacles, old clam shells, smelly seaweed and mussels? I do and this is my rendering of the lovelies of the sea. These have been washed up on shore by the millions I am sure thus we almost take them for granted. I love them and I can't wait to take another trip to the ocean shores to grab more photos. I did this "22 x 30" picture with coloured pencils for detail.
