Mindfulness is our ability to pay attention to our surroundings and to notice what we are sensing at any particular time. When you bring awareness to what is going on around you and quietly watch and listen you will become more alive in those moments.
The practice of mindfulness can be employed in many different ways and some of the most common are used with meditation and just being quiet and learning how to be present in the now. This exercise of mindfulness is a skill that can be used when looking at Art and doing Art.
I know that I often think about what I will be doing tomorrow or when I go to bed I think of yesterday or something from the distant past and this ruminating is not exceptionally helpful. I believe mindfulness is paying attention and having a conscious realization of yourself which can bring peace.
How does this relate to art and art appreciation? I like to think about paintings one at a time (I look at a lot of art these days) with the hope that the art sinks into my psyche and enhances my pleasure of painting. I feel like my perception and appreciation deepens as I spend the quiet time realizing the colours and structure and the handling of materials by the artist.
Mindfulness exercises can help us connect. We can be relaxed and unfettered from our judgmental thoughts and self accusation. We can own our artistic adventures and help to free

ourselves up to just play with our materials. I love collage for this very purpose, I want to freely express the colours, textures and shapes and make them interplay with each other.
Mindfulness, just look it up on Google and learn more about the subject it is one of the real helps that you can explore for yourself. Bring on the Peace!!!
