Multitasking in Art

Writer's picture: Gayle Howard ArtistGayle Howard Artist

I'm very excited when I start a new piece of art or an art project. I dive in and the work slowly progresses. I see my vision coming to life. It's working out. I cross over the mid point and when I begin to see I'm nearing the end of the job, I get stuck and fear sets in. What is this? I get held up and this nervous anxiety grips me. I start thinking about how much time and work I have put into this picture and where does it go from here? I just get stuck. Will this project look finished or will it say what I wanted to say?

Oh! when I read this back to myself it almost gives me more anxiety. Why is this happening?

I know we all want to be a success but I heard through the "grapevine" that trying to divert our minds and starting something new could work wonders to dissipate the apprehension.

The answer is: Try doing more than one project at a time....Multitasking breaks up the unease and the worry you may be experiencing, it gives you a breather and a new perspective and new ideas.

Many famous artists have multiple works going at once. I have learned that the time we spend in the studio the more productive will feel more productive and we will feel a big sense of accomplishment and we can banish the frustration.

So if we have a work going and then we get stuck, don't rip it up or even give up, just set it aside and give our brains a chance to catch up.
