I wonder ?

I looked up the word "wonder" in the dictionary this morning. I found that the real meaning of this word is eye opening. It says " #1 a cause of astonishment or surprise : MARVEL : MIRACLE : also #2 the quality of exciting wonder ( the charm and wonder of the scene). informative #3 a feeling ( as of odd astonishment or uncertainty) aroused by something extraordinary or affecting.

#4 to feel surprise or amazement and to feel curiosity or doubt.

When I was a kid I was always wondering. I mean really wondering and curious about many things. I once asked my dad, why is there an image on the moon that everyone calls " the old man in the moon"? We were outside the house in the cold dark night and I had my hand wrapped inside my father's huge warm hand and we looked up at the icy moon and he answered me and said " it's because of the mountains". So I not only wondered about the face in the moon but also about how could our mountains touch the moon to make that face. Later of course I caught on that he meant the moon mountains.

I continue to wonder and as the word "astonishment" comes to mind as it is hard to understand what is happening to this world, this country and all the possibilities of the future.

My wonderment is aroused by people of this world getting sick and dying in every corner. My hopeful days seem to be over. What happened to the days when everyone felt confident that medicine, hope and good practices would continue to protect us? What happened to the hope that everyone would, one day, look out for each other and there would be plenty, plenty of food, medicine, shelter and what seems to be the easiest of all "clean water"!!!

I still wonder and marvel at how this ultimately gorgeous and luxuriant planet is going to "hell in a hand basket" and turning toward death instead of life.

Who would have thought that this future will be left for our children. Just 50 years ago,

"everything was coming up roses" and us baby boomers were so excited and independent in planning our futures. We went to school and to work and moved wherever we so desired. I am dismayed and shocked to see ourselves descending these stairs because the elevator no longer works to lift us up to the higher places. Below: last years garden at the Howard's.
